  • A soldier. A woman walking, to the market maybe. One clad in camouflage and the other draped in garments the color of the sky in your dreams. It's the fabric that tells a piece of their stories. The camouflage tells about years of training, dedication to an ideal, sacrifice to that ideal, navigations between family and country- the stuff a soldier would never complain about. And then there's that passing azure - a cloak, a shield. It's harder to imagine what story unfolds under the weight of a burqa. To the soldier's western gaze, that cloak may tell the story of oppression and inequality. To the steady gaze emanating from that small slit of space around the eyes in the midst of all that blue, the camouflage may tell the story of invasion and occupation. <br /> <br /> Or maybe, in this moment of passing, both recognize that the narrative is more complicated than that. Seemingly so separate, thrust together by circumstances, two individuals pass in the street. In that moment of passing, if they can recognize the humanity in the other, then the narratives clash just a little less and our disparate worlds get just a bit closer.
  • From 1996 to 2001, the length of the Taliban rule, education was shunned. It was anathema to educate girls; Taliban law prohibited it and outlawed women working outside the home. Women with doctorates or medical degrees were banished to the home to watch over their daughters, exiled from education. Crumbling, hollowed out schools came to symbolize the disdain the Taliban had for education as they actively dismantled or destroyed many of the school buildings around the country. <br /> <br /> With the fall of the Taliban came a new era for education in Afghanistan. Before the Soviet Invasion, Afghanistan was renowned for its higher education and students from around the world sought degrees from its universities. While there is still far to go on the road to recovery, the commitment to education has been revived. Education is a salve for much of what plagues Afghanistan - poverty and the extremism and hatred bred by a lack of opportunity. <br /> <br /> The young children filling these classrooms don't think of education as a burden. Rather, they see every day they attend school as a blessing. They raise their hands eagerly wanting to respond to the teacher and they listen attentively when it's time to do so. They learn English and are proud of their accomplishments. The classrooms are simple and spartan. No fancy bulletin boards spotlight their artwork or creations. There's no pressure on the teacher to entertain the students to keep their attention; there's no enticement needed to get up early and go to school. The young boys and girls sitting in these school desks know the tragedy of ignorance. <br /> <br /> They are the future of Afghanistan and they are hungry for knowledge and understanding. If that hunger is nurtured, there can be hope for a future without strife and extremism.
