  • Saying goodbye before a deployment takes as much strength as anything else these SEALs do. They smile and comfort their little ones who don’t even understand how long six-months actually is while knowing all the things they will miss in their children’s lives. They want their kids to have normal childhoods defined by innocence, but they know that the realities of their jobs will eventually threaten that innocence. Here two men spend their last few minutes with their little boys. The knowledge that they will not be around much of the time to teach these boys how to become men weighs heavily on them. But they smile and try to give their sons a sense of normalcy in the face of absolutely extraordinary circumstances.
  • A mother and a SEAL wife who is usually in control of her emotions, just as she knows her husband would want her to be. But even the strongest of women have times when they are overwhelmed by the reality of the situation. A quiet moment with her daughter, an embrace with the person who is a part of the man she misses—that’s all she will need to get it together and face the day. There will be days she laughs and takes comfort in the fact that her husband is out there doing what he was called to do, but today, she needs this quiet moment.
  • A boy, dwarfed by his surroundings, waits for the father he hasn’t seen since he was a few months old. He stands under an American flag, a symbol of the reasons he has yet to really meet his father. And his father is outside the hangar somewhere, anxiously waiting to deplane and run to his son who will have grown bigger than he would have thought possibly. Maybe there’s a moment he regrets all those days he missed watching his boy grow and seeing his personality develop, but mostly he will be thankful that he’s home now to hold the boy.
